Settings is where you customize your Couple Tools experience, manage your account, and access various features and options.

Customize your privacy settings

Settings Overview

The Settings screen is organized into sections:

  • Lists - Manage People, Locations, and Task Lists
  • Couple - Couple profile, privacy, and subscription
  • Me - Your profile, preferences, integrations, and data
  • Support - Help and app information

Lists Section

People

Manage your saved contacts - friends, family, service providers, and anyone important to your lives. People you add here can be @mentioned throughout the app.

Features:

  • Add new contacts with name, phone, email
  • Set contact type: Family, Friend, Contact, Coworker, Neighbor, Other
  • Mark favorites for quick access
  • Store birthdays (for automatic reminders)
  • Add relationship notes
  • Upload or link photos

See the People screen for full management options.

Locations

Save important places - home, work, favorite restaurants, doctors' offices. Saved locations can be @mentioned in events, tasks, and other items.

Features:

  • Add locations manually or search by address
  • Set location type: Home, Work, Restaurant, Shop, Park, Gym, Other
  • Rate locations (1-5 stars)
  • Track visits
  • Store notes and custom details
  • View on map

Task Lists

Create and manage custom task lists to organize your tasks.

Default Lists:

When you first use the app, three default lists are created:

  • Shopping (Amber color, shopping cart icon)
  • Home (Green color, home icon)
  • Work (Blue color, briefcase icon)

Features:

  • Create new lists - Tap the + button in the app bar
  • Edit lists - Tap any list to edit its name, description, color, and icon
  • Reorder lists - Drag using the handle on the left side of each list
  • Delete lists - Swipe left to delete (tasks in that list become unassigned, not deleted)

Creating/Editing a List:

  • Name (required) - Give your list a name
  • Description (optional) - Add context or notes
  • Color - Choose from 16 colors (red, orange, amber, yellow, lime, green, emerald, teal, cyan, sky, blue, indigo, violet, purple, fuchsia, pink)
  • Icon (optional) - Choose from available task list icons

Deleting a List: If the list contains tasks, you'll see a confirmation showing how many tasks will become individual tasks (no longer in any list).


Couple Section

Couple Profile

Manage your couple account settings.

Couple Name:

  • Tap to edit your couple name (e.g., "The Smiths")
  • Both partners can edit the couple name

Partner Status (Owners Only):

The display changes based on your partner status:

No Partner Yet:

  • Shows Invite Your Partner option
  • Tap to enter partner's name and email
  • They'll receive an invitation email with a 6-digit code

Invitation Pending:

  • Shows the invited partner's name and email
  • Shows time since invitation was sent
  • Change/Resend - Update email or resend with new code
  • Cancel - Cancel the pending invitation
  • If the invitation code has expired, shows an "OTP Code Expired" warning banner

Partner Joined:

  • Shows your partner's name and profile
  • Shows the date they joined
  • Displays "Couple Account Established" message
  • Note: "Now that both partners have joined, this couple bond is permanent. Partners cannot be changed or removed."

Danger Zone:

  • Delete Account - Navigate to account deletion flow

Sharing & Privacy

Control default visibility settings for new items.

Default Privacy Settings:

  • Tasks Default - Shared or Private for new tasks
  • Events Default - Shared or Private for new events
  • Notes Default - Shared or Private for new notes

These defaults apply when creating new items. You can always change visibility on individual items.

Subscription

View and manage your subscription.

Information Displayed:

  • Current subscription status (Trial, Subscribed, Lifetime, etc.)
  • Subscription expiration date
  • Features included in your plan

Actions:

  • Manage subscription (opens App Store/Google Play)
  • Restore purchases
  • View subscription history

Me Section

My Profile

Your personal account settings.

Profile Information:

  • Avatar - Upload or change your profile photo
    • Take a new photo
    • Choose from gallery
    • Remove current avatar
  • Name - Your display name
  • Email - Your account email (read-only)
  • Mobile - Your phone number (optional)
  • Timezone - Your local timezone for accurate event times

Language:

  • Choose your preferred language variant
  • Options: English (US), English (UK), English (Australia), English (Canada), English (New Zealand)

Country:

  • Select your country (auto-detected from device locale)
  • Full country picker with search

Password:

  • Change your password
  • Requires current password for security
  • Enter new password and confirm

Connect Calendars

Sync Couple Tools with your external calendars.

Supported Services:

  • Google Calendar
  • Apple Calendar (iCloud)
  • Outlook Calendar

Main Toggle:

  • Enable/disable calendar integration

Connected Calendars:

  • View list of all calendars from connected accounts
  • Checkbox for each calendar to include/exclude from sync

Event Sync Settings:

  • Toggle sync on/off per service

Default Calendar:

  • Select which calendar new events export to (writable calendars only)

Privacy Toggle:

  • Show event details - Full event information syncs
  • Show as "Busy" - Only blocks time, no details shared

Sync All Calendars:

  • Button in app bar to manually trigger sync

Connect Contacts

Enable contact lookup to make adding people faster.

Features:

  • Search your device contacts when adding people
  • Autocomplete contact information
  • Quick import from contacts

Privacy:

  • Contacts are only used for search/autocomplete
  • Contact data stays on your device
  • You control what information to save

Preferences

Personalize your app experience.

Theme Mode:

  • Light - Always use light theme
  • Dark - Always use dark theme
  • System - Follow device setting

Theme Variant:

  • Choose from available color themes

Notifications

Control how you receive notifications.

Push Notifications:

  • Enable/disable all push notifications
  • Task assignment alerts
  • New message notifications
  • Event reminders

Email Notifications:

  • Summary emails
  • Important updates

My Data

Access and export your data.

Data Export:

Your data belongs to you. Request a full export of all your Couple Tools data at any time.

To export your data:

  1. Go to Settings > My Data
  2. Optionally check Include media files (photos, documents, attachments)
  3. Tap Request Export

Export Process:

  • Export is processed in the background
  • You'll receive an email when your export is ready
  • Download link is available for 7 days

Export Contents:

  • ZIP file containing CSV files and media
  • Includes: tasks, events, notes, messages, contacts, account data

Export Status:

While an export is active, you'll see status updates:

  • Pending - Waiting to start
  • Processing - Shows progress bar with record/file counts (e.g., "45/120 records • 12/30 files")
  • Completed - Shows file size and expiration date
  • Failed - Shows error message with option to request new export
  • Cancelled - Option to request new export

Actions:

  • Cancel Export - Cancel an in-progress export
  • Request New Export - After completion, failure, or cancellation

Account Deletion

Delete your account through a thoughtful process with safeguards.

To start account deletion:

  1. Go to Settings > Couple > Delete Account
  2. Review what happens when you delete
  3. Tap Request Account Deletion
  4. Confirm in the dialog

What Happens:

  1. 7-Day Cooling-Off Period - Account becomes read-only for 7 days
  2. Both Partners Notified - Your partner is informed and can download their data
  3. Restoration Possible - Both partners must agree to restore during the 7 days
  4. Permanent After 7 Days - All data permanently deleted, cannot be recovered

During Deletion Pending:

  • Account status shows "Deletion Pending" with days remaining
  • Account is read-only (cannot create or edit items)
  • Both partners can still view and download data
  • Shows restoration request status (X/2 partners)

Restoration:

  • Either partner can request restoration
  • Both partners must request restoration for the account to be restored
  • If restored, account returns to normal operation
  • You can see who has already requested restoration

Data Export Reminder:

  • Link to Settings > My Data to download your data before deletion

Tester Tools

This section is only visible to beta testers.

Debug and diagnostic tools for testing and troubleshooting.

Access:

  • Shows in Settings when tester mode is enabled
  • Contains technical diagnostic information

PowerSync Status

View real-time sync status:

Internal Status Card:

  • Initialized status (yes/no)
  • Connected status (yes/no)
  • Instance identifier
  • Database path
  • Current sync status

Sync Status Card:

  • Last sync time
  • Sync state
  • Connection status

Database Tools

Reset PowerSync Database:

  • Clears local database and forces fresh sync
  • Use when data appears inconsistent
  • Requires app restart

Rebuild Search Index:

  • Rebuilds the full-text search index
  • Use if search results seem incomplete

Reindex Messages:

  • Reindexes message content for search
  • Use if messages aren't appearing in search

Debug Information

User Info:

  • View your user profile as JSON
  • Copyable for support tickets

Device Info:

  • View device metadata as JSON
  • Includes OS version, device model, app version
  • Copyable for support tickets

Clear Database:

  • Completely clears the PowerSync database
  • More aggressive than Reset
  • Forces complete re-sync from server

Managing Your Partner

Inviting a Partner

If you created the account and haven't invited a partner:

  1. Go to Settings > Couple Profile
  2. Tap Invite Your Partner
  3. Enter your partner's name
  4. Enter your partner's email
  5. Tap Send Invite
  6. They'll receive an email with a 6-digit invitation code
  7. Code expires after 72 hours

Pending Invitations

If you've sent an invitation but your partner hasn't accepted:

  • View the pending invite status and time since sent
  • Change/Resend - Update email address or resend with new code
  • Cancel - Remove the invitation entirely

If the OTP code has expired:

  • Warning banner appears: "OTP Code Expired"
  • Tap Resend Invitation to generate a new code

After Partner Joins

Once your partner accepts:

  • Both of you have access to shared content
  • You'll see your partner's name and join date
  • The invite option is replaced with partner information
  • A message confirms: "Couple Account Established"
  • The couple bond is permanent - partners cannot be changed

Tips

  1. Set privacy defaults first - Configure your preferred visibility defaults before creating lots of items

  2. Add important people and locations - Populate your People and Locations lists to make @mentions more useful

  3. Create task lists for organization - Set up lists like Groceries, Home Projects, and Errands before adding tasks

  4. Check notifications regularly - Make sure notifications are configured so you don't miss important updates

  5. Keep your profile updated - An accurate timezone ensures events and reminders work correctly

  6. Invite your partner early - The app works best when both partners are using it together

  7. Connect your calendars - Sync with external calendars to see all your commitments in one place

  8. Export your data periodically - Use the data export feature to keep a backup of your information

  9. Use the Feature Tour - If you're new or want a refresher, take the in-app tour in Help & Support

  10. Check the Roadmap - See what features are coming next and vote on ideas you want
