Mentions (@mentions)
Mentions let you reference people, locations, and other items throughout Couple Tools. Instead of typing names or descriptions, you can @mention saved items to create links that stay up-to-date.
How Mentions Work
When you type @ in any text field that supports mentions, an autocomplete menu appears showing matching items from your account. Select an item to insert a mention that links to that entity.
What Can Be Mentioned
- People - Contacts from your saved People list (e.g., @Mom, @Dr. Smith)
- Locations - Places from your saved Locations list (e.g., @Home, @Giovanni's)
- Tasks - Your saved tasks (e.g., @Buy groceries)
- Events - Your saved events (e.g., @Date Night)
- Notes - Your saved notes (e.g., @Shopping List)
Using Mentions
Creating a Mention
- Start typing in any supported text field
- Type
@followed by a few letters of what you want to reference - An autocomplete menu appears with matching items
- Tap the item you want to mention
- The mention is inserted as a highlighted chip
Quick Trigger (QQ Shortcut)
You can also double-tap the Q key (QQ) as a quick way to insert an @ and open the mention menu. This can be faster than finding the @ symbol on your keyboard.
Mention Appearance
Mentions appear as highlighted chips that stand out from regular text. They show the item's name and are tappable to view more details.
Editing Mentions
To remove a mention, simply delete it like regular text. To change it, delete and re-create it.
Where Mentions Work
Mentions are supported in text fields throughout the app:
Tasks
- Title - Mention locations or people related to the task
- Description - Add context with @mentions
Example: "Pick up prescription for @Mom at @CVS Pharmacy"
Events
- Title - Mention the venue or person
- Description - Add event details with mentions
- Location - @mention a saved location instead of typing an address
- People - @mention contacts who are attending
Example: Title: "Dinner at @Giovanni's with @Mom"
Notes
- Title - Reference what the note is about
- Content - Use mentions anywhere in your notes
Example: "Gift ideas for @Dad's Birthday"
Chat
- Messages - Reference anything in your conversations
Example: "Don't forget to check @Grocery List before you go to @Target"
Benefits of Using Mentions
Stay Organized
When you mention a contact or location, the reference stays linked. If you update the contact's name or the location's details, the mention still points to the right item.
Quick Context
Mentions provide instant context. Instead of explaining "the restaurant we went to last month," just @mention it.
Tappable Links
Your partner can tap any mention to open that item directly. Mention your shopping list in a message, and they can tap to view it.
Searchable
Mentioned items are indexed, making it easier to find related content when searching.
Consistent References
Ensure you and your partner are referencing the same things by using @mentions instead of informal descriptions.
Tips
-
Save items first - You can only @mention items that exist in your account. Save people, locations, and other items before trying to mention them.
-
Type a few letters - After
@, type 2-3 letters to filter the autocomplete results. -
Use QQ for speed - If typing
@is awkward on your keyboard, use theQQshortcut instead. -
Use in task titles - @mention locations in task titles for context: "Buy milk @Target"
-
Use in event locations - Instead of typing addresses, @mention saved locations for quick entry.
-
Reference people naturally - Write like you would text: "Call @Dr. Smith about the appointment"
-
Mention notes for reference - Point to other notes: "See @Vacation Packing List"
Example Use Cases
Task with Location
Title: "Pick up dry cleaning @Downtown Cleaners"
The location @mention links to your saved location, so you can tap to see the address and hours.
Event with People
Title: "Birthday party for @Emma" People: @Mom, @Dad, @Sarah
Everyone mentioned is linked to their contact cards.
Note with References
Title: "Anniversary Planning" Content: "Restaurant: @Le Petit Bistro Gift ideas: See @Gift Ideas for Partner Reservation: Check our @Anniversary event"
Each mention links to the relevant saved item.
Chat Message
"Hey, I added @Buy birthday cake to the task list. It's for @Mom's party on Saturday at @Our House."
Your partner can tap any mention to see the full details.
